Master's theses and doctoral dissertations from the University of Kentucky Department of Mechanical Engineering are available here. is it generally viable to learn advanced procedures, such as VLOOKUP, INDEX/MATCH, pivot tables, vba macro-fu? office (design of products, tool design, stress...)? so far i've only edited an occasional BOM from autocad/ solidworks or used it to help my boss to prepare an offer for manufacturing. i also know that they used it for fatigue life calc in the college, but not me. can you describe some examples of advanced usage (vlookup, index, vba...) that you've solved with it? best regards, loki I use Excel extensively for structural design. I used to prefer Enercalc but found it to be very buggy and limited in many aspects. With Excel, I can program in a lot more design automation. I don't use VBA or macros, just basic stuff, including a lot of VLOOKUP, MATCH, OFFSET, INDEX, etc.

Following the successful completion of the first part of the course, the students embark on a four-month research project. For each student the topic of the project is the same as the one chosen for the Research Planning unit, for which a literature survey and a research plan will have already been produced. Students have the opportunity to choose a project from a variety of research topics that reflect the range of expertise of the academics that contribute to the course. Many of these projects would be related to on-going research programmes in one of the four research groups that support this course, namely the Advanced Flow Diagnostics, the Experimental Aerodynamics, the CFD, the Energy and Multi-Physics and the Turbulence Mechanics groups. A research project in industry is also sometimes possible. Flow animations that resulted from recent computational and experimental research projects.

One person tells me this is a British standard thread. Could someone tell me what this G thread is so that I can get the correct fittings. G (supposedly from German/English "Gas") are the cylindrical pipe threads used on originally inch based pipes. BSP threads are slightly different from NPT threads - the TPI is not always the same, depending on diameter, and the thread apex angle is 55 degrees instead of 60 degrees. The internal (conical) pipe thread is is described as "GCon". The size designation (like 3/8") does not mean actual thread OD; it is the internal diameter of the pipe, on which it is used. Yes, that's correct, although there is such a thing as a BSPT thread. To be more exact - the original internal diameter, because the pipes became thinner (better material, probably) but their OD's remain, for the exchangability purposes obviously. I'm not sure what the european designation of those is. They will seal without an "O"ring if PTFE tape is used or if a thread sealant like Locktite 515 is used.

Mechanical Engineering is the discipline that applies engineering, physics, and materials science principles to design, analyze, manufacture, and maintain mechanical systems. It is one of the oldest and broadest of the engineering disciplines. The mechanical engineering field requires an understanding of core areas including mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, materials science, structural analysis, and electricity. In addition to these core principles, mechanical engineers use tools such as computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), and product life cycle management to design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, transport systems, aircraft, watercraft, robotics, medical devices, weapons, and others. It is the branch of engineering that involves the design, production, and operation of machinery. Mechanical engineering emerged as a field during the Industrial Revolution in Europe in the 18th century; however, its development can be traced back several thousand years around the world. In the 19th century, developments in physics led to the development of mechanical engineering science. The field has continually evolved to incorporate advancements; today mechanical engineers are pursuing developments in such areas as composites, mechatronics, and nanotechnology.
Engineering remains one of the most important fields in any country, as it serves as the backbone for the operability of the economy. Almost all areas of manufacturing, maintenance, and repairs tie directly into mechanical engineering in particular. This subject is one which takes computer science and combines it with the. The mechanical engineering is a vast field of science as it has a lot of specialization branches. The researcher who has written a dissertation and obtained a degree in this sphere of science has an enormous potential. A vast array of career choices is open before the individual. This explains why the mechanical engineering dissertation is so important. The student should strongly rely on his or her abilities and preferences during the selection of the thesis topic on mechanical engineering.

Students entering the Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) program normally hold a baccalaureate in ME or a closely related field from an accredited institution. Students choose to pursue a master's degree because of the opportunity to develop a personalized academic program to strengthen their knowledge of Mechanical Engineering fundamentals in a specific area. Research areas include automotive, biomechanics and biosystems, controls, design, dynamics and vibrations, energy, fluids, manufacturing, mechanics and materials, mechatronics, robotics, micro/nano engineering, multi-scale computation and computational mechanics, and thermal sciences. There are three separate MSE degree program options in ME: (1) coursework only, (2) coursework with an individual research project, and (3) coursework with a MSE thesis. All program options require 30 credits and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 to graduate. A student will be placed on academic probation if his/her GPA falls below a 3.0. It is strongly recommended that all incoming Master's students communicate with the Graduate Coordinator (email@example.com) in the Academic Services Office early in the program. The MSE program provides the student with considerable flexibility.

In some contexts, the word "thesis" or a cognate is used for part of a bachelor's or master's course, while "dissertation" is normally applied to a doctorate, while in other contexts, the reverse is true. The required complexity or quality of research of a thesis or dissertation can vary by country, university, or program, and the required minimum study period may thus vary significantly in duration. The word "dissertation" can at times be used to describe a treatise without relation to obtaining an academic degree. The term "thesis" is also used to refer to the general claim of an essay or similar work. A thesis (or dissertation) may be arranged as a thesis by publication or a monograph, with or without appended papers, respectively, though many graduate programs allow candidates to submit a curated collection of published papers.
