Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances PFASs are highly persistent synthetic chemicals, some of which have been associated with cancer, developmental toxicity. The concept of conducting a detailed examination of the life cycle of a product or a process is a relatively recent one which emerged in response to increased environmental awareness on the part of the general public, industry and governments. The immediate precursors of life cycle analysis and assessment (LCAs) were the global modelling studies and energy audits of the late 1960s and early 1970s. These attempted to assess the resource cost and environmental implications of different patterns of human behaviour. LCAs were an obvious extension, and became vital to support the development of eco-labelling schemes which are operating or planned in a number of countries around the world. In order for eco-labels to be granted to chosen products, the awarding authority needs to be able to evaluate the manufacturing processes involved, the energy consumption in manufacture and use, and the amount and type of waste generated. To accurately assess the burdens placed on the environment by the manufacture of an item, the following of a procedure or the use of a certain process, two main stages are involved. The first stage is the collection of data, and the second is the interpretation of that data. A number of different terms have been coined to describe the processes.

Solutions for laboratory information management LIMS, online sample submission and chain of custody CoC, and environmental data management. Motivated by the 2006 report of a Work Group appointed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), this paper examines the present state of meta-analysis in environmental economics and offers recommendations for its future use. To this end we summarize and assess 140 meta-analyses from 125 published and unpublished studies, covering 17 topical categories in environmental and resource economics. First, we provide several generic meta-analysis models as reference points and discuss major estimation issues. Five econometric issues are identified as part of a complete analysis: (1) sample selection criteria; (2) basic data summary; (3) primary data heterogeneity; (4) heteroskedasticity; and (5) non-independence of multiple observations from primary studies. Second, a tabular summary is presented for the 140 meta-analyses with respect to estimation methods. Third, a narrative summary is presented for 19 meta-analyses, including the three value-of-statistical-life studies examined by the EPA Work Group and one analysis from each of 16 other categories. Fourth, we offer a set of “best practice” guidelines for future meta-analyses in this and other areas of economics. Last, the paper comments on the use of meta-analytic methods for benefit transfers of environmental values.

The field of paper-based microfluidics has experienced rapid growth over the past decade. Microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs), originally developed for point-of-care medical diagnostics in resource-limited settings, are now being applied in new areas, such as environmental analyses. Low-cost paper sensors show great promise for on-site environmental analysis; the theme of ongoing research complements existing instrumental techniques by providing high spatial and temporal resolution for environmental monitoring. This review highlights recent applications of μPADs for environmental analysis along with technical advances that may enable μPADs to be more widely implemented in field testing.

Writing an environmental analysis research paper is quite tricky. one needs to analyse the topic on scientific grounds, make proper research, elaborate and explain it in detail. Scientific research - Life Cycle Assessments - show that the opposite is true. Plastic shopping bags outperform paper bags environmentally – on manufacturing, on reuse, and on solid waste volume and generation. “[A] paper bag has a more adverse impact than a plastic bag for most of the environmental issues considered. Areas where paper bags score particularly badly include water consumption, atmospheric acidification (which can have effects on human health, sensitive ecosystems, forest decline and acidification of lakes) and eutrophication* of water bodies (which can lead to growth of algae and depletion of oxygen). Paper bags are anywhere between six to ten times heavier than lightweight plastic carrier bags and, as such, require more transport and its associated costs.
Aug 5, 2014. Environmental Analysis Paper. Write a 1,050 word paper in which you complete the following Research and describe the internal and external environments of 2 to 3 real-world companies using an environmental scan. Determine what competitive advantages each company has and what strategies each. When you go to the grocery store to buy the things you need, as soon as you approach the cashier you hear a voice asking you: "Paper or plastic? It is a simple question, but your answer has environmental impacts that you may not have considered. FACT: Plastic bags were first introduced in 1977 and now account for four out of every five bags handed out at grocery stores. What is a Life Cycle Analysis A Life cycle analysis involves making detailed measurements during the manufacturing of the product, from the mining of the raw materials used in its production and distribution, its use, possible re-use or recycling, and its eventual disposal. FACT: Paper bags are made from trees, which are a renewable resource. Most plastic bags are made from polyethylene, which is made from petroleum, a nonrenewable resource. Life cycle analysis enables a manufacturer to quantify how much energy and raw materials are used, and how much solid waste, liquid waste and gaseous waste is generated at each stage of the product's life.

Abstract Environmental quality in many developing countries is poor and generates substantial health and productivity costs. However, existing measures of willingness to pay for environmental quality improvements indicate low valuations by affected households. In the paper "Envirodevonomics", Greenstone and Jack. A comprehensive case study of Mumbai (Bombay), India was undertaken to investigate the economic, social and environmental impact of international trade of waste paper for recycling purposes between industrialised and developing countries. Analysis of a Western approach vis-a-vis informal policy for waste paper recovery concludes that employment is maximum under informal policy measure and public response plays an important role in maintaining environmental quality. The study further shows that income inequality is more under informal policy, and without policy public cost will increase continuously in the future. The net present value of the informal policy is found to be higher than that for the formal policy. Econometric study on input substitution in the Indian paper industry suggests limited substitution possibilities between domestic and imported waste paper.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that $3 billion was spent on electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) in 2013 in the United States alone, with sales expected to increase 17-fold in 15 years. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which has the authority to regulate certain tobacco and nicotine-containing products under the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act (2009) has issued a proposed rule to include e-cigarettes under this Act (FDA 2014). 2014; Callahan-Lyon 2014; Cheng 2014; Goniewicz et al. The NIOSH investigation included medical testing (including pulmonary function testing, medical questionnaires and work history documentation) and industrial hygiene exposure measurements (including grab samples, use of direct reading instruments, and full shift samples). The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) estimates that 1.78 million children tried e-cigarettes as of 2012, with 160,000 of them reporting that they had not used tobacco cigarettes (CDC 2013). Although the popularity and use of e-cigarettes continues to increase, data are lacking on the exposures and potential human health effects of the use of e-cigarettes. NIOSH determined that workers at this plant had 10 times the expected prevalence of airway obstruction (CDC 2007; Kreiss et al. A strong association was found between this excess of lung disease, including bronchiolitis obliterans, and airborne exposures to butter-flavoring chemicals in the facility. Concerns regarding e-cigarettes primarily focus on nicotine exposure, secondhand exposure, the potential for e-cigarettes to be a gateway to cigarette use, and renormalization/social acceptance of smoking (Bell and Keane 2014; Coleman et al. Diacetyl was the most prominent chemical in the butter flavorings. Other recent investigations have focused on the chemical content of the e-cigarettes beyond nicotine, with researchers finding that users of e-cigarettes are exposed to carbonyl compounds, aldehydes, fine particulate matter, metals, propylene glycol, glycerol, formaldehyde, VOCs, and other additives (Bekki et al. Researchers from the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Division of Respiratory Disease Studies conducted an investigation at the facility where the affected workers were employed. 2002), an irreversible loss of pulmonary function that can become so severe that the only treatment option may be a lung transplant (OSHA 2007). In May 2000, eight persons who had previously worked at a microwave popcorn–processing plant were reported to have severe bronchiolitis obliterans (Kreiss et al. 2014), only three papers have been published that focus on exposure to flavoring chemicals specifically (Farsalinos et al. The flavoring chemicals involved were on the Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) list that applies only to ingestion, but exposures were occurring via inhalation and very little was known about potential inhalation hazards of these chemicals at that time (FDA 2015). However, despite 7,000 flavors of e-cigarettes currently marketed (Zhu et al. 2014), and one opinion piece in that highlights the potential respiratory health effects from using flavored e-cigarettes (Barrington-Trimis et al. The use of flavorings in food products gained public attention in the early 2000s because of reports of serious lung disease in microwave popcorn workers (Hilts 2001).
