Agatha Christie wrote sixty-six detective novels, sixteen volumes of short stories, and nineteen plays under her own name; she also wrote five romantic novels as Mary Westmacott. Surpassed by only William Shakespeare, Christie’s work has been more widely published, in more languages, than any other author in the English language. Not surprisingly, this amount of literary output, written with the sole purpose of entertaining mystery fans but nonetheless still going strong decades after the author’s death, would eventually invite a closer inspection by critics. Many of Christie’s themes are found in : physical isolation, loose associations among suspects, the truism that “everyone has something to hide,” and an alternative brand of justice. The dead man’s killers did not plan on Detective Hercule Poirot’s presence on the train, and they did not count on the weather being so bad that the train would be stuck in the middle of what was then Yugoslavia. Without these two unexpected developments, the well-planned murder might have succeeded without a hitch, but the twelve murderers on the train had to improvise, had to alter their plans for revenge to account for the weather and for Poirot. The little improvisations, the little changes made by the suspects for the detective’s benefit, eventually led Poirot and his “little grey cells” to the truth. Literary critics who have found their way to the detective and mystery genre have rightly applauded Christie for her ingenious plots, her clever twists and turns.

Nov 10, 2017. Ever since seeing the trailer for the mystery thriller “Murder on the Orient Express,” a question has been nagging at you. It's not who among a diverse array of actors including Judi Dench as a Russian princess, Willem Dafoe as a German professor, Penelope Cruz as a depressed missionary and Johnny. As with his food, Poirot seeks perfection in all things, but he’s gifted – or cursed – with the ability to detect the seemingly infinitesimal flaws. Release Date: November 10th, 2017 MPAA Rating: PG-13 Director: Kenneth Branagh Actors: Kenneth Branagh, Daisy Ridley, Leslie Odom Jr., Tom Bateman, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Penelope Cruz, Josh Gad, Johnny Depp, Derek Jacobi, Sergei Polunin, Lucy Boynton, Michelle Pfeiffer, Marwan Kenzari, Judi Dench, Olivia Colman, Willem Dafoe n 1934 in Jerusalem, renowned detective Hercule Poirot (Kenneth Branagh), adorned with an unmistakably extravagant mustache, patiently waits for the perfect eggs to be fetched and prepared, just before he is summoned to the Wailing Wall, where he is to solve the mystery of a vanished artifact, blamed on one of three religious leaders. Where he demands balance and harmony (after accidentally setting a foot down upon animal droppings, he places his other, clean shoe into the mess to create a precise equality), he instead finds imperfections, which, with deductive reasoning, allows him to notice the details and motives that fellow investigators cannot. He’s also quite tickled with Dickens, and he’s a trifle superstitious. Although this introductory conundrum includes a flashback or two, the use of such a device is almost unnecessary. But it’s far less intrusive than the methods seen in Guy Ritchie’s modernized tellings of Sherlock Holmes, which are essentially recaps of entire scenarios that were withheld from the audience.

When the biggest difference between the new version of Agatha Christie's Murder on the Orient Express and its 43-year-old predecessor is arguably the size of the respective Hercule Poirot's moustaches, one has to wonder as to the pressing need for a remake. All the same, director-star Kenneth Branagh has delivered a version of Agatha Christie's 1934 murder-on-a-train mystery gem that may not be as starry but is snappier than the highly successful 1974 outing. Given the confined nature of the material as well as its period-specific aspects, this is a yarn that does not exactly invite radical reinterpretation. As such, its appeal is confined to the traditional niceties of being a clever tale well told, with colorful characters that are fun to watch being made to squirm by the inimitable Belgian detective. Moderate box-office results would appear to be in store for this Fox release that chugs out on Nov. Now as then, the roster of luminaries brought aboard for Sidney Lumet's uncharacteristically lush entertainment looks pretty astounding, beginning with Albert Finney as Poirot and also including Ingrid Bergman, Sean Connery, Vanessa Redgrave, Richard Widmark, Lauren Bacall, Anthony Perkins, Jacqueline Bisset, Michael York and Wendy Hiller.

In chapter one of Murder on the Orient Express, Agatha Christie describes Hercule Poirot as “a little man with enormous moustaches”, so we can hardly blame Kenneth Branagh for giving the Belgian detective such a terrifyingly bushy expanse of facial hair. Murder on the orient express essay

Nov 10, 2017. Agatha Christie's 1934 mystery novel Murder on the Orient Express has been adapted for the screen many times, most notably by Sidney Lumet in 1974. In the iconic tale, Christie's long-running character Hercule Poirot, the genius Belgian detective, finds himself trying to take a bit of a vacation while. In both book and film, there are twelve suspects aboard the train, plus four others: Poirot, his friend Bouc, a train conductor named Pierre Michel, and, of course, the dead body. In both versions, that body belongs to Ratchett (Johnny Depp), a con man who is secretly an American gangster notorious for orchestrating the kidnapping and murder of Daisy Armstrong, the daughter of a WWI hero. That fictional case bears an obvious resemblance to the real events of the 1932 Lindbergh kidnapping, in that Daisy’s death begat other tragedies. Daisy’s mother went into premature labor and died, Captain Armstrong shot himself, and an innocent maid accused of the crime jumped from a window. No wonder someone (or someones) wanted to stab Ratchett. The characters in the movie mostly fall into the same archetypes as they do in the book (the Butler, the Governess, the Princess, etc.) with some minor tweaks to accommodate a more diverse cast. The pious Swedish missionary Greta Ohlsson, for instance, is played by Penélope Cruz and renamed Pilar Estravados (a name borrowed from a different character in ), while Antonio Foscarelli, the Italian car salesman, becomes the Cuban Biniamino Marquez, played by Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. The biggest alteration might be to Leslie Odom Jr.’s character, Dr.
