He has pioneered research on energy efficient mobile cellular communications, the mathematical modelling of CSMA based MAC protocols for Wi Fi, iterative block coding for wireless communication systems and spreading sequence design for CDMA wireless networks. He is an entrepreneur, being the cofounder and CTO of Supergold Communication (2000-2007), a start-up that participated in the standardisation of IEEE 802.11g with the MBCK proposal. In the framework of Mobile VCE (m VCE), Professor O'Farrell was the Academic Coordinator of the Core 5 Green Radio project (2009-2012) and a leader in establishing energy efficiency as a global research field in wireless communication systems. He has managed 20 major research projects as principle investigator; he has published over 230 journal and conference papers; published 15 patents; and has participated in standards, consultancies and expert witness activities within the wireless sector. Currently, Professor O’Farrell is a member of the m VCE Steering Group where he leads the Modus Operandi Focus Group responsible for translating m VCE’s research vision into strategic research roadmaps and programmes.

This thesis proposes the deployment of waveguides consisting of frequency selective surfaces (FSSs) in indoor wireless environments and investigates their effect on radio wave propagation. The received power of the obstructed (OBS) path is attenuated significantly as compared with that of the line of sight (LOS) path, thereby requiring an additional link budget margin as well as increased battery power drain. In this thesis, the use of an innovative model is also presented to selectively enhance radio propagation in indoor areas under OBS conditions by reflecting the channel radio signals into areas of interest in order to avoid significant propagation loss.

In this thesis, we study wireless communications and cognitive radio transmis- sions under quality of service QoS constraints and channel uncertainty. Initially, we focus on a time-varying Rayleigh fading channel and assume that no prior channel knowledge is available at the transmitter and the receiver. We investigate. This dissertation provides the theory, design, and implementation of a cognitive engine, the enabling technology of cognitive radio. A cognitive radio is a wireless communications device capable of sensing the environment and making decisions on how to use the available radio resources to enable communications with a certain quality of service. The cognitive engine, the intelligent system behind the cognitive radio, combines sensing, learning, and optimization algorithms to control and adapt the radio system from the physical layer and up the communication stack. The cognitive engine presented here provides a general framework to build and test cognitive engine algorithms and components such as sensing technology, optimization routines, and learning algorithms. The cognitive engine platform allows easy development of new components and algorithms to enhance the cognitive radio capabilities. It is shown in this dissertation that the platform can easily be used on a simulation system and then moved to a real radio system. The dissertation includes discussions of both theory and implementation of the cognitive engine. The need for and implementation of all of the cognitive components is strongly featured as well as the specific issues related to the development of algorithms for cognitive radio behavior.
