A longtime Honors English teacher at Lockport High School has apologized for the assignment, which many described as anti-Muslim. Last Thursday, the teacher tried to put the lessons of “The Crucible” into modern day terms. The 1953 Arthur Miller play focuses on the Salem Witch trials. The teacher’s assignment was aimed at sparking a class discussion on the dangers of singling out a group of people. But the district started receiving complaints late Thursday and into Friday and took swift action. “The complaints we heard were that it was anti-Muslim and that the assignment itself was anti-Muslim,” district spokesperson Kim Brehm said. The complaints from students and parents were not just about the assignment but also the name chosen for the fictitious Muslim, “Ali Jahd Barak.” The assignment focused on Barak, who seemed suspicious to his suburban neighbor, and the neighbor was deciding if Barack should be reported.

This article examines issues related to minority teachers in New York City. Although increasing proportions of teachers hired in the last decade are black, Hispanic, or Asian, the gap between proportions of pupils and teachers remains due to increases in minority pupils. There are strong correlations between proportions of teachers and pupils in districts within racial and ethnic groups. The converse is also true; there are strong negative correlations between black and Hispanic teachers, for example, and percent of white and Asian pupils. Districts with larger proportions of minority pupils tend to have more “emergency” new teachers, fewer fully certified teachers, and fewer experienced teachers. Only 58% of the new black or Hispanic teachers, compared with 82% of white teachers, indicated they intend to remain in teaching after five years. Interviews with personnel directors suggest there are no systematic constraints on selection processes. New minority teachers queried about their job-search practices suggest somewhat more frustration with the process and less use of local leads than white teachers.

The parent of a child whose teacher asked his students to pen letters asking Congress to enact stricter gun laws urged parents to "be vigilant" regarding what their children are taught and told. According to a Blue Lives Matter report, the assignment from seventh-grade teacher Corey Sanders asked students "to pressure lawmakers to have stricter gun laws in the United States." William Lee, who is also a police officer, said on "Fox and Friends" Friday that he wouldn't have found out about the issue had he not asked what his son learned in school. "My biggest concern was, what was the intent of the assignment? I found out that it didn't have anything to do with what [the students] were supposed to be learning in that social studies class," he said. "It only gave [students] one perspective from which to write. That in itself, I didn't think was appropriate," Lee said. It turns out that the assignment had not been approved by the school district and the matter was addressed with the teacher. It has been handled appropriately with the teacher to ensure they know this is not acceptable and won't happen again." Watch the segment above. The Henry County School District told Fox News: "The lesson topic was not a part of an approved curriculum. We would never approve of a politically biased assignment or directive given by a teacher. (You may submit a Teacher Assignment Form for study on a second instrument, but it is unlikely that we will be able to support such requests.) In addition, all students enrolled in private instruction must participate in a Hunter ensemble, in each and every semester you are registered for private lessons. Teacher Assignment forms must be completed each and every semester (fall and spring) that a student plans to take private lessons for credit, and must be submitted according to posted deadlines (see above). In instances where there is a large ensemble that is clearly appropriate for the lessons a student is receiving, the student is required to participate in that ensemble (e.g., a voice student in choir or chamber singers, a jazz saxophonist in jazz ensemble, a violinist in the orchestra), unless by prior arrangement with that ensemble’s director. This is by no means meant to discourage students from gaining additional musical exposure from other ensembles: the department encourages this. Requests to be exempt from these requirements must be stated in the comment box on the Teacher Assignment Form. Please consult the Music Department policies regarding private instruction. Submission of the Teacher Assignment Form does not mean that you will automatically be registered for private lessons. You must register for private lessons (MUSPF 401, MUSPF 402, MUSPF 431, MUS 681-684) yourself, just as you would with any other course. If enrolled for private lessons, you must begin private instruction no later than the end of the second full week of classes.

The Teaching Assignment. You have your class assignments for the coming school term. You know which subjects you will be teaching. But what do you teach? Algebra, geometry, trigonometry? These generic terms do not tell you what you will be teaching from day to day. You will have to do some planning, but you need. 17177 Issued in June 2011 NBER Program(s): Economics of Education The literature on effective schools emphasizes the importance of a quality teaching force in improving educational outcomes for students. In this paper, we use value-added methods to examine the relationship between a school's effectiveness and the recruitment, assignment, development and retention of its teachers. We ask whether effective schools systematically recruit more effective teachers; whether they assign teachers to students more effectively; whether they do a better job of helping their teachers improve; whether they retain more effective teachers; or whether they do a combination of these processes. First, we find that more effective schools are able to attract and hire more effective teachers from other schools when vacancies arise. Second, we find that more effective schools assign novice teachers to students in a more equitable fashion. Third, we find that teachers who work in schools that were more effective at raising achievement in a prior period improve more rapidly in a subsequent period than do those in less effective schools. Finally, we find that more effective schools are better able to retain higher-quality teachers, though they are not differentially able to remove ineffective teachers. The results point to the importance of personnel, and perhaps, school personnel practices, for improving student outcomes.
