May 20, 2017. The research conducted by Foster-Fitzpatrick, Ortiz, Sibilano, Marcantonio and Braun 1999 is a quantitative study of the significance of crossing the legs while blood pressure is being measured. The purpose of the research was to determine whether leg-crossing impacted the results of blood pressure. Abstract Self-determination theory (SDT) provides a model to improve pharmacy students' wellbeing or functioning in their study context. According to SDT, students need a context that satisfies their needs for autonomy, relatedness and competence in order to function optimally. Contextual factors that could have an impact on a student's functioning are lecturers, family, peers and workload. To investigate whether there is a difference between the contributions family, lecturers, peers and workload make towards the satisfaction of pharmacy students' basic psychological needs within a university context. An electronic survey was administered amongst students registered with the North-West University's School of Pharmacy. Registered pharmacy students, 779, completed said electronic survey comprised of a questionnaire on demographics, BMPN (Balanced Measure of Psychological Needs) and self-developed ANPNS (Antecedents of Psychological Need-satisfaction Scale). Data derived from the afore-going was analysed with the aid of structural equation modelling (SEM). Structural equation modelling explained 46%, 25% and 30% respectively of the total group's variances in autonomy, competence and relatedness satisfaction, and 26% of the variance in psychological need frustration.

Criteria differ for critiquing a quantitative versus a qualitative study ie, statistics are evaluated in a quantitative study, but not in a qualitative study. This article provides on. Questions are provided that help evaluate different sections of a research study eg, sample, data collection methods, data analysis. PMID 19801006. When critiquing a research paper, you are evaluating the research and the argument made by the author. This paper will critique two different research articles; one qualitative and one quantitative. To evaluate a research article, one will need to look at what the author is claiming, their research methods, and any problems there might be with the claims made. The quantitative article, The Effects of Crossed Leg on Blood Pressure Measurement, attempts to determine whether a patient crossing their legs at the knee during a reading will have an effect on the reading in any way. There are many questions to ask and many elements to look at when critiquing a research paper. The Experience of Patients Undergoing Awake Craniotomy, the qualitative study, interviewed patients before and after having awake craniotomy surgery to gain understanding of their experience, thoughts, and feelings surrounding the surgery. Title The qualitative research title identifies the key phenomenon and the group they are studying. For this study, they wanted to document the experience of patients who have had an awake craniotomy. The quantitative study has a title that identifies the key variables, however, the title does not mention a specific population for the study. Abstract “A conceptual definition describes the abstract or theoretical meaning of a concept being studied. An operational definition specifies procedures required to measure a variable” (Polit & Beck, 2012, p. The conceptual and operational definitions of the quantitative research article are congruent because the researchers clarify their concept and explain how they will be measures as well as the operations performed to measure the concept.

Getting your hands on a critique paper example before critiquing scientific papers can be handy especially if this is your first time to write one. Qualitative critique requires deep understanding of the topic as well as knowledge regarding various methods of research and analysis to get the best results. For those who are not familiar with the techniques or don’t have enough time in their hands to do so, your best bet would be to look for a writing service that can handle critique of scientific paper to hire. As someone who works in the security industry for ten years, I find this argument quite compelling and worth listening to. Wade used several phrases such as “outmoded”, “dead technology”, and “outdated” to accurately portray the condition of text passwords nowadays. His first idea that when there is an increase in the processor’s speed it means that the system is being attacked is quite sound.

This paper will critique a qualitative research study published in the Journal of Medical Ethics in 2004, By Dr Helen Aveyard, about how nurses manage patients who refuse nursing care procedures. The article explains how nurses view informed consent as not being essential to nursing care procedures. Problem Statement The clinical problem being examined in the research study is the way in which nurses obtain consent prior to administering nursing care procedures, and the way nurses manage patients who refuse any nursing care procedures. By stating that nurses “do not regard obtaining consent as an absolute requirement” also stating that “consent is preferred but no considered essential” the significance is established and a clinical problem identified.(Aveyard, 2004, p. 346) The author identifies the need for further education of nurses on the need to obtain informed consent for nursing care procedures, and the need for more research of this topic.

You work on a palliative care unit where you have many opportunities to discuss end of life decisions with patients and family members. In a recent team meeting of your unit’s providers, the topic of “appropriate” treatment choices for patients at end of life comes up. Some providers believe that they should counsel patients and family members to “help them make better end of life decisions so that they will have a good death.” There is, however, no consensus about how this should be done.. In the field “word(s) anywhere in article” you type in “end of life” (in quotations because you are looking for articles that include all 3 words together) and “decision”. The first is an abstract entitled “Providers tried to help patients and families make end of life decisions”. Despite this controversy, and while recognising that criteria will continue to evolve, we provide a set of guidelines to help nurses identify methodologically sound qualitative research studies that can inform their practice. Our standard approach to appraising an article from the healthcare literature is readily applicable (table, or whether the research reflects best standards of qualitative science, is described in terms of rigour, credibility, trustworthiness, and believability. Numerous articles and books focus on validity issues for qualitative research. Similarly, there are several qualitative research designs, and each has slightly different conventions for their appropriate conduct. This Users’ guide provides an overview of the critical appraisal of qualitative research but, as with various quantitative research designs, there are variations in how rigour and validity are addressed in specific designs.

An example of this is eating disorders, in which a person manipulates the amount of nutrition they may receive, either by denying oneself or over indulging in it. Healthcare workers, in Nurses are responsible in providing holistic, quality care to their clients. In order to effectively provide such care Boswell and Cannon (2009, p. 2 & 7) states that nurses must base their provision of care on the most current, up-to-date health information available and sound nursing knowledge. This is where evidence-based practice (EBP) comes in. 4) defined EBP as "the use of the best clinical evidence in making patient care desicions". This usually comes from research conducted by nurses and other healthcare professionals. Thus it is pertinent that research reports are critically analyzed. A research critique aims to measure the value and significance of a study. These are determined by analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of the report (Brockopp & Tolsma, 2003, p. Recommendations for areas of improvements are also included in a research critique.

Qualitative researchers judge the adequacy of a sample for a given study by how comprehensively and completely the research questions were answered. Thorne suggests that critiquing qualitative research in health sciences disciplines demands not only a focus on traditional appraisal criteria, but also an examination. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate how we can critique a qualitative research article according to the criteria as recommended by Mc Millan & Wergin (1998:pp.7-12). The sample article being examined is by Goh (1999), Whilst it is not possible to reproduce the article here, it is suggested that the critique procedure itself is being exercised in order to demonstrate its usefulness to readers of qualitative research. The guiding questions operate as effective criteria to understanding the quality and benefits of any given qualitative research paper. Introduction With regards to qualitative designs, Punch (1998:p.150) explains that within any given piece of research a combination of elements from different designs can overlap. As a result, a study may not necessarily be a case study, an ethnographical study nor a work based on grounded theory but rather a mixture of two or more of these approaches. Punch does however suggest that it is ‘still useful to consider each separately’. This is important to keep in mind when critiquing an article such as this as in fact components of different approaches and paradigms co-exist within the one research body as the author has attempted to uncover what it is she is looking for. This does not necessarily mean however that a research article needs to be labeled as being one type of research or another, but rather to take it as what it is; within the context of the investigation and considering the limitations in which it was carried out, we can still grasp an idea of its validity and usefulness.
