Note: When this essay was first published in June 2005, very few online or scholarly reference guides to slave rebellions cited the Black Seminole rebellion as a slave uprising and none cited it as the country's largest. Since then, thanks in part to this essay and website, more references correctly note the size of the Black Seminole slave rebellion, though many still omit it. Introduction Look at any standard reference to American slave revolts, and chances are, the Black Seminole rebellion of 1835-1838 does not even make the list. Below are some representative sites that can be readily checked online: The oversight is not unexpected given that the major scholars of American slavery, on whose writings the reference works rely, have likewise missed or misinterpreted the Black Seminole slave rebellion. According to John Hope Franklin, Eugene Genovese, Stanley Elkins, Kenneth Stampp, Herbert Aptheker, and the many scholars who have relied on these giants in the field, the Black Seminole maroons joined Indians to fight the U. Army in 1835, and some of the maroons may have been runaway slaves.

The public furor provoked by Essays and Reviews was more intense in the early 1860s than that provoked by the Origin, immensely so within the Anglican Church. Both the Church's evangelical and Anglo-Catholic wings were deeply skeptical of or hostile to such accommodations with modern thought. As the Bishop of. These gave publicity to Darwin’s theories, and they also contained extended reflections on the possible implications of these theories for natural theology and religious belief. Darwin was particularly pleased with one of these reviews, and arranged for it to be republished in England as a pamphlet. A collection of Gray’s reviews was published in book form in 1876 under the title . This was reissued in 1963 but is now rare and difficult to obtain. Seven of these reviews, written between 18, which bear especially on the topic of Darwin and religion, are provided here in fully searchable form.

Goodwin, Mark Pattison and Benjamin Jowett. 1860 Essays and Reviews. Lux Mundi (“Light of the World”) is a collection of 12 essays written by a group of 11 Oxford theologians in the late 1880s. The collection was edited by Charles Gore, the Principal of Pusey House (named for E. Pusey, the Tractarian) and Fellow of Trinity College (which had admitted John Henry Newman to its honorary fellowship in 1878), later a founding member of the Community of the Resurrection and successively Bishop of Worcester (1902), Birmingham (1905) and Oxford (1911). The essays center on the claim that the Incarnation is the central tenet of Christianity. Incarnation informs and shapes all aspects of Christian thinking and life. The essays presented an attempt at sympathetic engagement with contemporary thought, by presenting the Catholic faith (as understood by Anglo-Catholics) as thoroughly consistent with developments in science and politics. Whatever disappointments they may have occasioned the essays were a publishing success, running through 10 English and several American editions in the first year.
Controversy, especially religious controversy, was the great spectator sport of Victorian England. This work is a study of the biggest and best of Victorian religious controversies. Essays and Reviews 1860 was a composite volume of seven authors six of them Anglican clergymen which brought England its first serious. Owen vacilated between accepting or denying evolution but was certain that Darwin's proposed mechanisms were wrong. [Return to text] (18) 'The extent to which the resemblance, expressed by the term, "Unity of Organisation," may be traced between the higher and lower organised animals, bears an inverse ratio to their approximation to maturity.' (Owen, , &c., 8vo. (An edition in two volumes of this original and suggestive work, was printed, with the life of the author (Demaillet), at the Hague, in 1755. These cirripedes have no branchiae, the whole surface of the body and sack, including the small frena, serving for respiration. Owen argued instead for a confusing theory of "the continuous operation of the ordained becoming of living things." In addition to throwing scorn at Darwin's ideas Owen heaped praise on his own! [Return to text] (8) The most numerous illustrations of this principle are to be found in Owen's palontological works and memoirs; but he refrains from announcing it as a general law, probably regarding the induction as being yet incomplete. The Balanidae or sessile cirripedes, on the other hand, have no ovigerous frena, the eggs lying loose at the bottom of the sack, in the well-enclosed shell; but they have large folded branchiae. John van Wyhe converted this text from one prepared by Ian Johnston of Malaspina University-College, Nanaimo (johnstoi@ca). Now I think no one will dispute that the ovigerous frena in the one family are strictly homologous with the branchiae of the other family; indeed, they graduate into each other.' (P. That is, a series of modifications are affirmed to have been met with in different species, changing a respiratory into an ovigerous organ. Owen's footnotes have been moved to the end of the document, with numerical references in the text. (P. Should this graduation of parts be confirmed, and the respiratory function of the folded membranes in be determined, Mr. The translations after the quotations from foreign works (given in square brackets) are by Ian Johnston. Landow reformatted the document and added links to materials on this site. 14) [The varieties of each of them must have been that much stronger and more numerous as the circumstances of the locations or its nature permitted it to extend itself more widely. Darwin will have contributed both an interesting observation, and a valuable discovery.
Because the former characteristic was so visible, the Lux Mundi group was easily distinguished from the authors of Essays and Reviews 1860, who, although their predecessors in attempting to use modern knowledge in theology, never escaped the image of being less than genuinely committed to the Church. The Lux. This first Library of America volume of Emerson’s writing covers the most productive period of his life, 1832–1860. Our most eloquent champion of individualism, Emerson acknowledges at the same time the countervailing pressures of society in American life. Even as he extols what he called “the great and crescive self,” he dramatizes and records its vicissitudes. Here are the indispensable and most renowned works, including “The American Scholar” (“our intellectual Declaration of Independence,” as Oliver Wendell Holmes called it), “The Divinity School Address,” considered atheistic by many of his listeners, the summons to “Self-Reliance,” along with the more embattled realizations of “Circles” and, especially, “Experience.” Here, too, are his wide-ranging portraits of Montaigne, Shakespeare, and other “representative men,” and his astute observations on the habits, lives, and prospects of the English and American people. This volume includes Emerson’s well-known Nature; Addresses, and Lectures (1849), his Essays: First Series (1841) and Essays: Second Series (1844), plus Representative Men (1850), English Traits (1856), and his later book of essays, The Conduct of Life (1860).

Southey's talents and acquirements to write two volumes so large as those before us, which should be wholly destitute of information and amusement. Yet we do not remember to have read with so little satisfaction any equal quantity of matter, written by any man of real abilities. We have, for some time past, observed with great regret the strange infatuation which leads the Poet Laureate to abandon those departments of literature in which he might excel, and to lecture the public on sciences which he has still the very alphabet to learn. The subject which he has at last undertaken to treat is one which demands all the highest intellectual and moral qualities of a philosophical statesman, an understanding at once comprehensive and acute, a heart at once upright and charitable. Southey brings to the task two faculties which were never, we believe, vouchsafed in measure so copious to any human being, the faculty of believing without a reason, and the faculty of hating without a provocation. He judges of a theory, of a public measure, of a religious or a political party, of a peace or a war, as men judge of a picture or a statue, by the effect produced on his imagination. It is, indeed, most extraordinary, that a mind like Mr. A chain of associations is to him what a chain of reasoning is to other men; and what he calls his opinions are in fact merely his tastes. Burke assuredly possessed an understanding admirably fitted for the investigation of truth, an understanding stronger than that of any statesman, active or speculative, of the eighteenth century, stronger than everything, except his own fierce and ungovernable sensibility. Southey's, a mind richly endowed in many respects by nature, and highly cultivated by study, a mind which has exercised considerable influence on the most enlightened generation of the most enlightened people that ever existed, should be utterly destitute of the power of discerning truth from falsehood. Part of this description might perhaps apply to a much greater man, Mr. Hence he generally chose his side like a fanatic, and defended it like a philosopher.
