Thesis - UST Sta. Rosa College of Tourism and Hospitality Management by Edrick Bryan Paguio. ART REFORMATION and cutting-edge solutions to urban problems were among the focus of this year’s best theses from the Colleges of Fine Arts and Design and of Architecture. Advertising Arts student Portia Hizon focused on fashion design and merchandising. Titled “Patched: Shabby Chic Casuals,” her thesis offers patchwork quilted clothes in shabby chic style with young women as target audience. “As an artist, I am really into details,” she said. “This is probably why I chose the very intricate technique of patchwork quilting as my thesis topic. I chose shabby chic because it brings out the feminine side of women in a subtle way.” Leo Cosim, another Advertising Arts student, did a book illustration campaign for Gilda Cordero Fernando’s “The Magic Circle” to reflect the author's message in promoting Philippine myth. Cosim combined pen and ink technique with digital color for the re-illustration project. “I want us to appreciate what is ours,” Cosim said. The moral lesson of the book is excellent and people of all ages can relate to it.” Meanwhile, most of the top theses from the College of Architecture sought to address environmental concerns by applying the concept of sustainable architecture: an “oceanarium” by Fernando Cunanan, an arboretum by Ela Ruth Del Rosario, an eco-housing project by Kenneth Marvin Masing and an urban redevelopment headquarters by Makoto Hojo.

Approval of a thesis proposal as approved by the UST Dean of College of Architecture, evaluation and final approval of the unbounded thesis book excluding the final design drawings and solutions, and satisfactory compliance of all the requirements of the Architectural Thesis Logbook. 2.2 Expected Output. This listing. This thesis presents an architecture for task independent autonomous flying vehicles. We review the conventional architectures such as the model-and-planner, behavior-based, and the subsumption architectures. We focus on their mechanism, their basic assumptions and their weaknesses. Based on the review, we propose the Strategic Architecture, an adaptive composition of a set of strategic multi-agents, which over-comes limitations of the existing architectures. In the Strategic Architecture, each strategy is designated to deal with a particular task and the composition of strategies tackles more complex tasks. The proposed Strategic Architecture maintains a uniform design for its low level control, high level planning, and multi-robot cooperative system thus facilitating the strategies' composition. This highly modular organization reduces the dependency between strategies and, hence, increases the reusability of strategies. Based on the Strategic Architecture, we have designed an autonomous system for model helicopter that takes the advantages of this new architecture.

Two faculty members of the College of Architecture joined other researchers from other architectural schools across the country to present their respective studies in the 15th Annual Conference on Architectural Research and Education (ACARE) held on August 22 and 23, 2016 in Iloilo City, Iloilo. The conference was organized by the Council of Architectural Researchers and Educators (ARCHCARE) and the Department of Architecture of University of San Agustin in Iloilo, and had for its theme, “UMWAD: Developing the Future without Forgetting the Past.” Ar. Michael Abuan, presented his paper, “Converging Social Classes through Humanized Urban Edges” under the Urban Design Session. His study discussed the use of responsive design principles in bridging socio-cultural separation experienced in dilapidated or blighted urban spaces. The paper pointed out that to humanize spaces, the design needs to go back to the basic features of humanness: identity and belongingness in a community. Felicisimo Tejuco, Jr., presented a proposed heritage trail in his paper, “Commemorating the Heroism of the Second World War (WWII) through a Heritage Tourism Master Plan.” Initially, six major destination trails, which celebrate heroism and valor, were identified.

Most often, this consists of source code or more commonly bytecode translation to machine code, which is then executed directly. A system implementing a JIT compiler typically continuously analyses the code being executed and identifies parts of the code where the speedup gained from compilation or recompilation would outweigh the overhead of compiling that code. JIT compilation is a combination of the two traditional approaches to translation to machine code – ahead-of-time compilation (AOT), and interpretation – and combines some advantages and drawbacks of both. Roughly, JIT compilation combines the speed of compiled code with the flexibility of interpretation, with the overhead of an interpreter and the additional overhead of compiling (not just interpreting). JIT compilation is a form of dynamic compilation, and allows adaptive optimization such as dynamic recompilation – thus, in theory, JIT compilation can yield faster execution than static compilation. Interpretation and JIT compilation are particularly suited for dynamic programming languages, as the runtime system can handle late-bound data types and enforce security guarantees. JIT compilation can be applied to some programs, or can be used for certain capacities, particularly dynamic capacities such as regular expressions. For example, a text editor may compile a regular expression provided at runtime to machine code to allow faster matching – this cannot be done ahead of time, as the pattern is only provided at runtime.

What area of art history/architectural history did you focus on in graduate school? I attended the University of Virginia and have a Master’s and Ph. in Architectural History which is unusual, as most programs offer Art History titled degrees. I focused on sacred space in the 19th and 20th centuries during my time at Virginia, writing a Master’s thesis on a 19th-century Trappist Monastery in England and my dissertation on the Abbey Church of Saint John’s here in Minnesota. My current research considers the design of World War II museums internationally, with a special focus on the National World War II Museum in New Orleans, the subject of my book manuscript. Did you know that in the last decade that several war museums have opened around the world (Canada, Poland, Germany, England, etc.) and that the National World War II Museum in New Orleans ranks 2nd in the nation and world according to the 2017 Trip Advisor Travelers’ Choice awards? (The award highlights the world’s most popular museums based on quality and quantity of consumer ratings). There are wonderfully powerful stories in these places, in both exhibits and architecture. The best advice came from my Methods professor at Virginia, Camille Wells. Wells told me that the best thesis/dissertation is a COMPLETED thesis/dissertation. This means that at some point you have to let your work go forward, and I realized with the publication of my book on Saint John’s Abbey Church, that a book, thesis, etc., is just the start of something – it opens up a dialogue about the object that is wonderful to be a part of! If you weren’t a professor, what would you do and why? Someday I’ll take my son on a storm chasing vacation in the summer and look at the built environment along the way.
