All Pomona concentrations require the completion of a senior exercise, a project that is intended to demonstrate that students can think independently and creatively about their chosen disciplines and can use the research tools of those disciplines. The Biology Department senior thesis represents the culmination of your. The non-thesis option requires twenty-nine credits in formal courses and special assignments (independent study, research and reading) and one credit in seminar. The special assignment credits cannon exceed six; and the reading credits cannon exceed three. Of the total of thirty credits, twenty-one credits must be in the primary area of biology at 5000 levels and nine credits in supporting areas. Students exercising this option must pass a written comprehensive exam for the degree. A Graduate Advisory Committee, including a major professor, will be formed to assist in the development of a plan of study. The committee will work closely with the student to design a cohesive, academically meaningful program suited to the student’s goals. Students may choose one of the areas of specializations for their plan study: Biotechnology (focusing molecular biology and genetics) Physiology/Cell Biology, Microbiology, or Ecology. Each student admitted to a degree program must submit a Plan of Study.

The Senior Thesis, a long running program, has been replaced by RISE, Research Intensive Senior Experience. RISE retains the best elements - such as student-center research projects that can lead to publications and direct interactions with faculty and their lab members - while expanding the program to allow a broader range of experiences. Additionally the student assignments have changed from a written thesis to a manuscript and a poster, both of which are more commonly encountered in professional scientific settings. RISE is optional for students and is offered as a year-long commitment for 3-cr in each the fall and spring terms. The link below are lists of senior theses (through 2011) and RISE projects (starting in 2012) that have been conducted over the past 15 years. They are organized by graduation year, and then alphabetically by student name.

Biology students in their 4th year have the option of pursuing an undergraduate Research Thesis, wherein students investigate a specific field of interest under the guidance of a faculty member. If this is something you are interested in, you will need to start thinking about this early in your 3rd year. Think about the courses you have taken that you have enjoyed, look at the research interests and papers published by your professors, and talk to current thesis students; basically, get as much information as you can. You should talk to the professor that you hope to work with by November or early December in your 3rd year, if possible. There are a limited number of places with each professor and they fill up quickly.

The senior thesis is the report of a student's independent research project. Whether based in the laboratory or not, the thesis should demonstrate a solid knowledge of molecular biology and of the problem under analysis. It should move logically from this background to one or more clearly articulated, testable hypotheses. Welcome to the homepage of the Graduate Program in Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB) at Stony Brook University. The Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB) Graduate Program at Stony Brook University offers graduate training in virtually all aspects of modern biological sciences. Our students select their thesis advisors from over 100 faculty members in several departments: Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Pathology, Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, Pharmacology, Chemistry, Physiology, and Medicine. The MCB graduate program also enjoys close scientific links with the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and Brookhaven National Laboratory. The MCB program serves as an umbrella program that builds close ties among all contributing departments, with the intent of promoting a collaborative environment that encourages interdisciplinary research.
There are so many biology thesis topics that often it becomes a problem for students to pick one that will be really interesting for them, and at the same time original and not overworked. Receiving honors in research recognizes a student for outstanding accomplishments in research. Students majoring in the Undergraduate Program in Biology and Medicine (UPBM) with research of exceptional quality and a minimum biology GPA of 2.7 may apply for candidacy during their senior year. Candidates must have developed a novel body of work that includes publication-quality data from which to generate a senior thesis. In addition, candidates must successfully present and defend their senior thesis before a faculty examination committee. A good example would be an article from PNAS the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. A thesis must be at least 20 pages long, not including references. The Program in Biology administers an Honors Program to train students to conduct independent research in the biological sciences. Participating in the honors program allows students to develop their research skills, deepen their understanding of the field, and form productive relationships with faculty and other students. The achievement is noted on the diploma and official transcript. In addition to completing all the requirements for the major, an honors degree requires: (1) a major GPA of at least 3.4, and (2) the completion of a significant piece of independent research that is (3) reported in an honors thesis and (4) presented in a public forum. Year: Apply to honors (or non-honors) program, identify research project and mentor, plan project timeline Junior Year: Conduct research with mentor (under MCDB or EEB 300/400) Senior Year: Continue research, complete thesis, present in public forum 3rd Week of Term you Plan to Graduate: Absolute Deadline to Apply to Declare 1st of the Month you Plan to Graduate (April 1, December 1, August 1): Thesis Due Date For those students interested in research who do not meet the 3.4 GPA cutoff, a non-honors thesis option is available.
