The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is a United Nations International Day against drug abuse and the illegal drug trade. It is observed annually on 26 June, since 1989, a date chosen to commemorate Lin Zexu's dismantling of the opium trade in Humen, Guangdong, just before the First Opium War. By Tony Maddox Executive Vice President and Managing Director of CNN International You know that moment when you read something, and then immediately have to re-read it because you cannot believe it is true? The United Nations estimates the total market value of human trafficking at 32 billion U. But let’s remember the commodity here is not drugs or contraband; it is human beings. Those unable to defend themselves, those who innocently trust the intentions of others, those who can easily be made to disappear. That happened to me when I read that the levels of slavery and people trafficking today are greater than at any point in history. Obviously there is no precise figure, but the International Labor Organization and respected abolitionists like Kevin Bales and Siddharth Kara put the global number of slaves at between 10-30 million worldwide. Driving the global people trading business is ruthless greed, vast returns on investment and crucially, government ineffectiveness. The cruelty and inhumanity of those who would profit from such a crime is truly shocking. In Europe, criminals are pocketing around $2.5 billion per year through sexual exploitation and forced labor. In previous centuries, when slaves were captured and traded each had a significant market value. Although their ill-treatment was often horrific, the reality was that it made economic sense to keep a slave alive and functioning, to protect what was usually a significant investment, made with a view to long term. Many girls and women, who are trafficked, particularly for the sex trade, are done so with a view to high rate of return over a relatively short period of time.

Jun 24, 2016. International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking is observed on 26 June every year to raise awareness about illicit drug abuse and trafficking. This day was first observed by the UN General Assembly in 1987. According to United Nations statistics 230 million people worldwide are using drugs. The cheerful paintings of flowers on the tall metal posts on the Tijuana side of the border fence between the U. and Mexico belie the sadness of the Mexican families who have gathered there to exchange whispers, tears, and jokes with relatives on the San Diego side. Many have been separated from their family members for years. Some were deported to Mexico after having lived in the United States for decades without authorization, leaving behind children, spouses, siblings, and parents. Others never left Mexico, but have made their way to the fence to see relatives in the United States. Elsewhere, the tall metal barrier is heavily patrolled. With its prison–like ambience and Orwellian name—Friendship Park—this site is one of the very few places where families separated by immigration rules can have even fleeting contact with their loved ones, from 10 a.m. So is to be the wall that President Donald Trump promises to build along the border. The border, and more broadly how the United States defines its relations with Mexico, directly affects the 12 million people who live within 100 miles of the border. But no matter how tall and thick a wall will be, illicit flows will cross. In multiple and very significant ways that have not been acknowledged or understood it will also affect communities all across the United States as well as Mexico. Undocumented workers and drugs will still find their way across any barrier the administration ends up building. The wall comes with many costs, some obvious though hard to estimate, some unforeseen. And such a wall will be irrelevant to those people who become undocumented immigrants by overstaying their visas—who for many years have outnumbered those who become undocumented immigrants by crossing the U. The most obvious is the large financial outlay required to build it, in whatever form it eventually takes.
