We know there are lots of people like you from countries all around the world who would like to take a degree in English. But you're worried that your English isn't good enough. So your writing skills only need to be good enough for a pre-university course. But even if your writing skills are stronger than this, we still think this would be a useful course for you. May 24, 2012. Every now and again I hear some author putting down how-tos. “You can only learn to write by writing,” they'll say. “Don't waste your time studying writing books. Just put a page in front of you and write!” Which strikes me as making as much sense as saying, “You can only learn to do brain surgery by doing. All thinking occurs within, and across, disciplines and domains of knowledge and experience, yet few students learn how to think well within those domains. Despite having taken many classes, few are able to think biologically, chemically, geographically, sociologically, anthropologically, historically, artistically, ethically, or philosophically. Students study literature, but do not think in a literary way as a result. They do not know how to think like a reader when reading, nor how to think like a writer while writing, nor how to think like a listener while listening. Consequently they are poor readers, writers, and listeners. They use words and ideas, but do not know how to think ideas through, and internalize foundational meanings. They take classes but cannot make connections between the logic of a discipline and what is important in life. Even the best students often have these deficiencies. To become a skilled learner is to become a self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinker, who has given assent to rigorous standards of thought and mindful command of their use.

But that simple conflict wouldn’t drive the entire film. The film’s writers brought in several sub-conflicts that feed off the main conflict. You may be familiar with the KISS-methods of storytelling. When Marty arrives in 1955, he messes up history as he knows it. Besides trying to get home, Marty has to fix all the problems he caused. At the climax of the film with all of the sub-conflicts solved, it’s time for Marty to go home. Following the KISS-method, Marty would get in the time machine and head back to 1985. Thankfully, the writers threw the KISS-method out the window. Doc Brown has to reconnect electrical conductors twice. Marty, having to simply drive the car when the alarm goes off, can’t get the De Lorean to start.
